A Chief Inspector Gamache Mystery Book 20 by Louise Penny, 2024, Audiobook narrated by Jean Brassard, MacMillan Audio

Unfortunately, this series is beginning to feel old. The characters are the same but that might be the problem. We have been getting to know each of them through nineteen previous books and there doesn’t seem much more about them that is surprising.

This book is really the second half of the previous book, The Grey Wolf, which really didn’t finish. It was left to this book to find out who was really the Black Wolf who was orchestrating a plot for the U.S. to invade Canada and make it into the 51st state (the book was sent to the published before our esteemed leader proposed the exact thing, although he didn’t mention actually invading Canada).

The plot has numerous characters, and the reader is led sometimes to believe that they are acting on Gamache’s side but sometimes the opposite. There were so many twists and turns that I felt worn out by the time I finished the book.

The narrator, Jean Brassard, is getting better, but he still hasn’t captured the voice of Gamache as well as his two predecessors did.

I suppose that Louise Penny will write another one and I suppose I will get the audiobook and listen to it, but I find that with each one I am experiencing a little less enjoyment.
