Pride and Prejudice – 2005
This movie remake of Jane Austen’s novel is flush with great acting and wonderful scenes of the English countryside and manor homes. Actress Keira Knightley is wonderful to watch and makes the movie a really enjoyable event.
The story focuses on conventions of society and how individuals get caught up in them, in spite of what might make a lot better sense. Many of the characters in the story make decisions that are forced upon them by what is expected of them, rather than what might make them happy in the long run. The hero and heroine of the story fight off those conventions and eventually make another choice.
The movie ends in a somewhat sappy kiss that panders to the emotions of the audience. Also, Jane Austen’s plot is somewhat simplistic and lacks the twists and turns of a more complex, modern adventure. Other than that the movie is enjoyable and very easy to watch.
I went to this movie quite prejudiced against it! Keira Knightley is NOT my idea of Elizabeth. But I was pleasantly surprised by how she captured the character. I also loved Judi Dench as Lady Catherine, tom Hollander as Mr. Collins, and especially Donald Sutherland as Mr. Bennet.
The living conditions of country gentlefolk are demonstrated in a way I’ve never seen before — the animals upon which they depend are part of their lives and appear in nearly every outdoor scene.
All this being said: there is only one definitive and faithful adaptation of P&P, and that is the 1995 BBC production, shown here on A&E. I urge anyone who enjoyed this movie to watch this miniseries!
