Last Sermon for a Sinner

Wilson's Weblog Posted on June 24, 2020 by LarryJune 24, 2020

by Claremary P. Sweeney, 2019, EBookBakery Books

This book is listed as a “South County Mystery.”  The only reason I read it is that it takes place in Peace Dale, close to Narragansett where we spend our summers.

The book is chock full of references to local sites and establishments so it was a bit like coming home.  Unfortunately, the mystery did not provide much suspense and the writing is a bit choppy. While I did like the characters, I sometime found that it was hard to determine who was doing the talking is some of the dialogue.

i appreciate the author’s dedication and descriptions of the local areas in South County, RI, but the story just wasn’t that great.

American Dirt: A Novel

Wilson's Weblog Posted on June 7, 2020 by LarryApril 9, 2022

by Jeanine Cummins, 2020, Audiobook narraated by Yareli Arizmendi, Macmillan Audio

This book is a tough one to review because it’s not a bad book, but it’s not really a good book either.  The book was a selection for Oprah’s book club and received a great deal of publicity and acclaim.  Then it came under attack with scathing criticism because it was written by a white American author rather than someone who was supposedly Latina.  I personally don’t feel that a book should be judged based on the ethnicity of its author but rather on the work itself.

My disappointment with the book is because I felt the story wasn’t about the what I was expecting.  I was expecting a novel about some individuals migrating to the U.S. and requesting asylum.  The story turns out to be about a mother and child attempting to escape the grip of the crime cartels in Mexico after they killed her journalist husband and the other members of her family.  Lydia, the mother, had access to a considerable amount of money which helped her pay for her illegal passage into the U.S.  She and her son made it across with some difficulty, but did not experience any of the trauma associated with the refugee and asylum process (camps, separation from children, etc).

The story itself was okay but didn’t seem to grab me much.  The ending was abrupt and didn’t give a lot of satisfaction as to how it resolved.

So, while I reject the criticism that the book would only have been authentic if it had been written by a Latina author, I didn’t think reading (listening to) this book offered me much to get excited about.2.0 stars

The Kings Depart, The Tragedy of Germany: Versailles and the German Revolution

Wilson's Weblog Posted on June 1, 2020 by LarryJune 1, 2020

by Richard M. Watt, 1968, Barnes and Noble Books.

Quite a few years ago my son showed me a box of books that he had been assigned to read when he was studying for his master’s degree in Eastern European History at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.  I managed to grab a few of the books from the box and this was one of them.  It sat on my shelf in the den for many years until I decided to pull it off and read it.  The covid-19 quarantine added to the time I had on my hands to read it.

I had no idea what it was about.  I thought it had to do with the demise of kings in many countries after WWI, but it dealt entirely with Germany.  As I read the book I was amazed at how good the book is.

First of all, I had no idea of what went on in Germany during WWI, during the Armistice, and immediately after until the signing of the treaty.  It turns out that few others did as well, notably, the French, British, and Americans who were tasked with the drafting of the treaty.  When the book refers to “The Kings Depart” it refers to the multiple kings that were still in power in Germany prior to WWI.  Germany was a collection of small kingdoms knit together by the sheer will of the Prussians.  In fact, the German constitution dictated that the King of Prussia, was also the Emperor of Germany.

I also was not aware that Germany suffered a violent Bolshevik revolution right after the Armistice went into effect and many of the cities were, for a time, under the rule of Bolshevik parties. The revolution was put down by more moderate forces of the remnants of the German Army and the militias that sprung up throughout Germany.

One thing I took away from reading this book is how fragile a democracy can be in a country where the culture is not conducive to a democratic form of government.

I can’t begin to describe all the history and events that this book contains.  The really outstanding feature of this book was the way in which the author brought it all together.  His writing style is excellent and his conclusions and opinions as to why things happened the way they did seem very well thought out.

The book is somewhat long (530 pages) and there is a lot of detail, but, overall, an excellent work.4.5 stars

A Column of Fire

Wilson's Weblog Posted on May 14, 2020 by LarryMay 14, 2020

by Ken Follett, 2017, Audiobook narrated by John Lee, Penguin Audio

This is an addition to Follett’s other historical novels, this one related primarily to the reign of Elizabeth I in England.  The characters are typical of Follett’s writing.  The primary hero is an individual named Ned Willard who, although he comes from a fairly small town in England, rises to become knighted and one of Elizabeth’s trusted advisors.

The story provides a rich backdrop of history and moves along pretty well.  The characters, as in Follett’s other historical novels, however, are somewhat unbelievable.  They are, for the most part, either diabolically evil or good and heroic as in the case of Ned Willard.  The world is a constant battle between good and evil.

Follett also provides a stark picture of the intolerance evidenced by religions in that era, be they Catholic or Protestant.  The world veered from the intolerance of one religion to the other, depending on which held the most power at any given time.  Follett paints a picture that is very dark when it comes to organized religion.

I had the good fortune to listen to the book while I either walked or worked on a manual project.  In this way I made good use of my time and didn’t get bogged down on reading this very long novel. 3.5 stars

The Spy and the Traitor: The Greatest Espionage Story of the Cold War

Wilson's Weblog Posted on March 26, 2020 by LarryNovember 25, 2024

by Ben Macintyre, Kindle Version, 2018, Broadway Books, Reprint edition

This is the story of Oleg Gordievsky, a KGB agent who began providing information to MI6.  The story is intriguing, especially since I had never heard of this individual and the extraordinary impact of the information he provided.  The author makes the case that his information may have prevented a nuclear confrontation between the U.S. and the USSR and also may have led to the trust that Reagan and Gorbachev seemed to instantly feel when they first met.

On the whole, the book was an interesting read, although it bogged down a bit, not because the the author’s treatment, but there were times when not much was happening.  Toward the end, however, it got pretty exciting due to events that I won’t relate here as it would spoil it for a reader. 3.5 stars

Commonwealth

Wilson's Weblog Posted on March 5, 2020 by LarryMarch 5, 2020

by Ann Patchett, 2016, Audiobook narrated by Hope Davis, HarperAudio

I was totally disappointed in this book!  Fortunately, we got this audiobook from the library so I didn’t pay anything for it other than wasted time.

The book is about two families where the spouses get divorced and marry each other.  It focuses on the children of the marriages and the effects of the disruption that this situation causes… or so I think.  After finishing the book, I now am unclear as to what it was about.

The one redeeming feature of this audiobook was the narrator, Hope Davis.  She did a really outstanding job capturing the voices of each of the characters.  One of the problems of the book, however, is that there are too many characters to keep track of and I gave up trying to figure out which one was which and which one I was supposed to focus on.

I actually didn’t mind listening to the book, at least until the end.  And what an ending!  It just ended; not in the middle of a sentence or paragraph, but almost.  I think the author finally realized that the book was totally pointless and she didn’t have any idea where it was going.  Better to just end it and that’s exactly what she did.  What a piece of work that was!

I just can’t imagine that an author of the apparent renown that Patchett enjoys would stoop to publishing such a novel.  I think it shows the current state of popular fiction that an author can get away with it.1.0 stars

Notre-Dame, A Short History of the Meaning of Cathedrals

Wilson's Weblog Posted on February 28, 2020 by LarryMarch 5, 2020

by Ken Follett, 2019, Viking

This book is, indeed, short – only 62 pages.  At the end of the book there is a note indicating that the book was written in seven days in April of 2019.

Follett wrote the book shortly after the fire in Notre-Dame.  It consists of his thoughts and emotions after witnessing the tragedy of the fire.  In addition to his musings on the fire, there are some thoughts regarding his publishing of his novel, Pillars of the Earth,  some information regarding the building of the cathedral, as well as a chapter about Victor Hugo and his writing of The Hunchback of Notre-Dame.

It is an interesting book given Follett’s writings about cathedral building, but it isn’t close to any history of the meaning of cathedrals.  It’s more just an author’s musings, which is fine, but I’m a bit disappointed in the claim its subtitle purports it to be. 3.5 stars

The Summer Before the War: a Novel

Wilson's Weblog Posted on February 20, 2020 by LarryMarch 5, 2020

by Helen Simonson, 2016,  Kindle version, Random House LLC

This is the story of a family in England before WWI and how it affects their lives.

I decided to read this because it was shared to me by my wife on her Kindle.  I wanted to like this book, but it was just too slow.  I did like the characters, even though many of them were stereotypes.  The story was okay but lacked any depth.  Just another book cranked out by an author hoping to sell some books but nothing noteworthy.

Note: I just discovered as I perused the list of books I have read that I had already read this book back in January of 2017.  I guess it’s a testament to how little of an impression the book made on me in that when I listened to it, I didn’t even remember that I had already read it! 2 1/2 stars

Machines Like Me: A Novel

Wilson's Weblog Posted on January 25, 2020 by LarryFebruary 5, 2020

by Ian McEwan, 2019, Audiobook narrated by Steven Crossley, Recorded Books

This is an interesting book about a man who buys a robot to experiment what it would be like to have as a companion for him and his girlfriend.  The book is set in the 1980’s, during and after the Falklands War.  McEwan changes history significantly as the outcome of various historical events are the opposite of what actually occurred during that time.

The technology associated with this robot is far advanced of what was available at that time.  In fact, the book was published in 2019 and such capabilities as he depicts are still not available.  Despite the inconsistencies with historical facts and technological advances, the story is a compelling fantasy about what it could be like if such a robot were a reality.

Coupled with the technological and ethical issues that are associated with this invention, McEwan uses the altering of facts to satirize the political and social environment in England at the time.  It was fun to listen as the story progressed, as it was easy to be caught off guard not expecting the events that unfolded.

My only criticism of the book is that the ending is a disappointment.  There was so much that could have happened after the book ended and I was left wanting a more robust and fulfilling ending to an otherwise well-written and interesting story.

One very nice advantage of listening to this novel is that the reader captured the mindset and personality of the main character so well.  I would have missed this if I had read the book rather than listening to the audiobook.3.5 stars

Your Heart, My Hands

Wilson's Weblog Posted on January 15, 2020 by LarryJanuary 15, 2020

by Arun K. Singh, M.D., with John Hanc, 2019, Center Street, Hachette Book Group, New York

This is the story of a person who started his life as a delinquent boy in India who immigrated to America and became one of the preeminent cardiac surgeons in the United States.

He spent most of his career at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence and was a professor at the Brown University Medical School.  He performed over 15,000 cardiac surgeries during his career.

I graduated from Brown and have lived in Rhode Island (seasonally) for over 17 years, but I had never heard of this individual.  His story is inspiring.  He is a living tribute to the argument for immigrants in this country.  He is also an advocate for providing quality health care to those who cannot afford it.

This is a really inspiring story. 4.0 stars
