Here is a biographical sketch on Nathan Brown that was published in the Portrait and Biographical Record of Winona County, Minnesota, in 1895:

Nathan Brown, who follows farming on section 1, New Hartford Township, was born on the 24th of April, 1820, in Clinton County, N.Y., and is a son of Charles and Sarah (Newton) Brown. The father was a native of Rhode Island, and a farmer by occupation. In the family were eight children: Renolds, now of Dakota, this county; Mrs. Mary Guynarup, now deceased; Nathan, Mrs. Elizabeth Baker and Mrs. Mercy Boyington, both deceased; Leonard, who is living on the old homestead in Washington, N.Y., which belonged to his grandfather; Jared, now of Dakota, Winona County; and Sarah, wife of James Wilson. The father of this family was a successful man of business. He had no educational privileges in his youth of any importance, but was a great Bible student, and was a member of the "Iron-Jacket" Baptists. He served in the War of 1812, and his father was one of the heroes of the Revolution (Jonathan). The latter lived to the advanced age of ninety-two years, and Charles Brown passed way in 1870, at the age of seventy-nine. He had a strong constitution and death came very suddenly. He several times visited his children in Winona County, and while at the home of his daughter, Mary, he passed away. His wife, who was a native of Vermont, died at the age of about fifty-eight years.

Nathan Brown enjoyed no special advantages in his youth, and from early life has been inured to hard labor. His school privileges were indeed limited. After attaining to man's estate, however, he began to realize the need of an education, and through his own efforts has obtained a practical business knowledge. He has also read quite extensively, and is now well informed on the leading questions of the day. He was still a young man when he determined to come West. He had left home on attaining his majority, and began work for himself, scorning no labor which would yield him an honest living. He was industrious and enterprising, and by economy and perseverance, he had secured a capital of about $8,000 at the time of his removal to the West.

It was in 1849 that Mr. Brown started for Minnesota, and on the 29th of September arrived in Winona County. He had obtained a permit to engage in business as an Indian trader. Land had been entered by a company for a town site, and Mr. Brown was entitled to a homestead. He also secured one hundred and sixty acres of land on the same section, and afterward bought another one hundred and sixty acres of a company, paying $1,900 for the entire amount. He has here since made his home, and is now the owner of four hundred acres of valuable land, situated on sections 1, 7, and 12 of New Hartford Township. He was the second white settler in the county, and during all the years which have passed since his arrival he has lived upon the old homestead, where he yet resides. In his business he has prospered. He made judicious investments in land, which he sold when a favorable opportunity presented itself, and when he thirty-six years of age, had he sold out, he could have realized $20,000 in cash.

In 1852 Mr. Brown started for Milwaukee. He went by boat to Galena, and thence by stage to within thirty miles of Chicago, where he took a train upon the first railroad which ever ran out of Chicago. The road was built upon the old flat-bar system, and now forms a part of the Illinois Central. After going about ten miles the train was ditched, plunging down a bank about fifteen feet. Mr. Brown thought the railroad very treacherous, but at length safely reached Chicago, where he boarded a boat for Milwaukee. The object of the journey was made known when he returned with a bride. On the 3rd of October, 1852, he married Eliza A. Bartholomew, daughter of Isaac and Tirza (Houghton) Bartholomew, the former a native of Vermont, and the latter of New Hampshire. In their family were twelve children, six of whom are yet living. The father was a farmer, and both he and his wife died in New York.

Mr. Brown would not risk his bride upon a railroad train, but took a stage across the country from Milwaukee to Galena, and thence proceeded by boat to his home in Dakota. On the 21st of July, 1854, Mrs. Brown was called to the home beyond, and on the 9th of April, 1856, Mr. Brown married Julia E. Bartholomew, a sister of his first wife. They became the parents of ten children, eight of whom are now living. Isaac C., born April 16, 1857, died September 23, 1864. Leslie L., born November 5, 1858, is one of the leading lawyers of Winona. Hoyt N., born January 4, 1861, is now engaged in railroading in Arkansas. Carlos H., born April 16, 1863, carries on farming at home. Gile H., born January 23, 1865, is a farmer. Cora, born December 15, 1867, is at home. Mrs Gracie Cass was born April 19, 1869. Dora, born December 16, 1870, is attending school in Milwaukee. Arthur J., born February 11, 1874, is at home. Evelyn, born February 3, 1876, died January 18, 1889.

When Mr. Brown was first married, he returned with his wife to Dakota; here he had a two-story house and a store, where he sold goods to the few pioneer settlers of the neighborhood, and to the Indians, who were his principal customers. When Mr. Brown arrived here, Winona had not yet sprung into existence. It was laid out in the fall of 1850, and the first house was built by a Mr. Johnson, and furnished by Capt. Orin Smith, an old steamboat captain. Mr. Brown has therefore witnessed the entire growth and development of the county, and is one of its most honored pioneers. The land which was in possession of the Government at the time of his arrival, and which was the home of Indians, has been transformed into highly cultivated farms; towns and villages have sprung up, and the work of progress and civilization has been carried forward, until not Winona County occupies a leading place in the state. Mr. Brown has ever borne his part in the work of improvement, and none are more familiar with pioneer history in this community than he. In his business he has prospered, and is now in very comfortable circumstances.

In his social relations Mr. Brown is a Mason, and in his political affiliations is a Democrat. He was one of the first County Commissioners. At the first election there were three chosen for the office. The one who received the most number of votes was to serve for five years, the second for three years, and the third for two years, and when the ballots were counted it was found that Mr. Brown had the largest number. He served from 1853 until 1859, and in 1874 was again elected County Commissioner. He has never sought office, but his fitness for his position was recognized by his fellow townsmen, and he therefore received the election.

The following is an unsolicited tribute from a gentleman who is fully competent to judge of Mr Brown's many qualities:
"Mr. Brown has been from the first a most rugged and conspicuous figure in our history, distinguished for his manly courage, his fidelity to friends, as well as to truth and principle. He does not seek contention, yet, when thrust upon him, he does not retire from the ordeal. He can be depended upon to stand by the right as he understands it, without counting the cost. He has met and unflinchingly faced many dangers incident to frontier life, and if his environment should ever be such as to require the qualities of real greatness, he would not be found wanting in the hour of trial."

Will:
This will represents the final disposal of his grandfather's, Jonathan Brown's, farm in Washington County, New York. As Leonard had no direct descendants, he directed that, if none of his nieces or nephews named in his will had an interest in acquiring the property, it could then be sold at auction and the proceeds distributed. The executor of the will complied with this direction by eventually selling the said property in 1907.

Jerod Brown.

JEROD BROWN, a farmer residing on section 7, Dresbach Township, claims New York as the state of his nativity. He was born in Clinton County on the 4th of March, 1830, and under the parental roof was reared to manhood, the days of his boyhood and youth being quietly passed. When he had arrived at man's estate he started out in life, and has since been dependent on his own resources, so that whatever success be has achieved is due entirely to his own efforts. His first work was in a sawmill, where he received $16 per month in compensation for his services. This mill was located on the Hudson River, and he was there employed for about three years, after which he started westward, having determined to try his fortune on the broad prairies of the Mississippi Valley. He started in April,1852, and on the 8th of May reached Bunnell's Landing. Soon after he came to Dakota, where he engaged in chopping wood and working on the railroad. He followed various pursuits whereby he might earn an honest living until his marriage, when he turned his attention to farming.

On the 4th of November, 1855, Mr. Brown was united in marriage with Miss Harriet C. Mott, daughter of Annis Mott. They began their domestic life on section 1, New Hartford Township, where Mr. Brown had a farm of one hundred and sixty acres. There he made his home for thirty-five years, giving his time and attention to agricultural pursuits. He prospered in his undertakings, and his enterprise and industry were rewarded by a comfortable competence. He afterward removed to his present home, where he owns ten acres of land, which is devoted to the raising of berries. This is his only business, and it yields him an income sufficient for his present wants, and he has a snug sum laid by for a rainy day.

To Mr. and Mrs. Brown were born five children, three of whom are yet living. Ann Eliza, born January 10, 1857, died December 30, 1861; Olive T., born January 25, 1860, is the wife of Edward F. Shippey, who resides on the old homestead farm in New Hartford Township; Leonard J., born October 21, 1862, lives on the farm with his sister; Vincent C., born March 21, 1866, makes his home in Appleton, Minn.; and Charles L., born March 26, 1873, died November 3, 1882.

Mr. Brown is numbered among the pioneer settlers of Winona County. On leaving his old home in the East lie went by stage from Glens Falls to Port Edward, and thence by rail to Buffalo, N. Y., where he took passage on a boat bound for Detroit, Mich. From that place lie proceeded by rail to New Buffalo, Mich., and thence took a boat to Milwaukee, whence he proceeded to the end of the railroad, a distance of twenty-nine miles. Here he again took a stage and went across the country to Galena, Ill., and thence by boat continued on his way to Homer, Minn. Here he went through all the experiences and hardships of frontier life. His first home was a log cabin, which was later replaced by a good frame residence. He also built a good frame barn, cleared his land of the timber, and has transformed one hundred and sixty acres of raw prairie into one of the finest farms of the county.

OBITUARY.
Jonathan Brown*
At St. Lawrence State Hospital, Ogdensburg, N, Y,, of brain disease, Jonathan Brown, aged 7 years and 3 months.
Brother Brown was born in West Chazy, and was the oldest son of Deacon Edmond Brown, one of the pioneer settlers of that place, and located his farm near what used to be called the Douglass Corners.
He experienced religion at 18 years of age and united with the primitive Baptist church here, who worshipped God in the Douglass school-house, and remained true to the faith till death. He was, at the time of his death, a member of the Baptist church, of Iowa Falls, Iowa, where he lived two years, from 1868 to 1870.
He married when 28, Louisa Goodspeed, with whom he lived till God took her home in 1880, This was the crushing blow of his life. His love and attachment for his wife was so strong, that after her death he never rallied sufficiently to fully realize the necessity of renewing the battle tor life's duties and responsibilities.
He moved to Ellenburgh, West Hill, in 1848, with his wife and two children, a son and a daughter. He has always been a resident of Ellenburgh, West Hill, and Ellenburgh Center, except the two years he lived at Iowa Falls, Iowa.
Although a strong Baptist in sentiment and belief, yet he always felt at home wherever the true and living God was worshipped and had a zeal for his Master's cause always, and never neglected to tell of the goodness of God to his soul, and rejoiced that he could testify for Christ. Always at prayer-meeting and classy-meeting, fervent in prayer or exhortation, he gave no uncertain sound.
When his brain, by disease, became so weakened that he could nor, fully realize his real surroundings, he always felt that he was near his Saviour, and would exhort others to seek that Saviour, who was so good to him, and he could sing of redeeming love to his latest breath,
Of near relations, he leaves a son at Ellenburgh Center, two brothers In west Chazy, and a grandson at Ellenburgh, West Hill, and a grand-daughter at Troy, N. Y., and a large circle of acquaintances who were always his friends, to mourn his loss.

Clarence E. Wilson, M. D., a physician and surgeon of Dakota Village, was born in New Hartford township, this county, November 2!, 1860, son of James G. and Sarah (Brown) Wilson. After receiving his preliminary education in the public schools, he entered the Chicago Independent Medical College from which he graduated in 1896. Since his graduation he has kept abreast of the latest developments in therapeutics and pathology by taking post-graduate courses in 1901, 1902, 1903, 1905 and 1910. After his completion of his course, Dr. Wilson opened an office in Dakota where he has since successfully continued in practice. Aside from attending to his medical practice, Dr. Wilson has been more or less identified with the agricultural interests of the county, and at one time owned a good farm. Dr. Wilson belongs to Pickwick Lodge, No. 110, A. F. and A. M., and to the Modern Woodmen of America, at Dakota. Dr. Wilson was married May 19, 1884, to Edna Harvey, who was born in Winona county, July 15, 1866, daughter of Fletcher and Rachael Harvey. Dr and Mrs. Wilson have six children, five of whom are still living. They are: Sibyl (deceased), Vida, Alice, Claude, Rolland and Sylbia. Vida is now Mrs. Daniel Luther, of La Crescent,.Minn., and has two children. Alice is now Mrs. Earle Smith, of Dakota village, and has three children. Rolland attends the Winona high school.

Pickwick

Funeral services for William Wallace Wilson were held at the Methodist church at Dakota, Wednesday, April 12, at two o'clock under the direction of the Masonic Order. Rev. A.T. Wallace of Winona officiated and interment was made in the Dakota cemetery.

William Wallace Wilson was born at Dakota Aug. 27, 1864, in a family of thirteen children. He died at the hospital at La Crosse, April 9, 1922, after an illness of six months. Aug. 20, 1904, he was married to Miss Clara Kourtz at Meloma, Wis. To them were born three children, Mildred, Melinda, and Helen, who survive him. Mr. Wilson moved here about twelve years ago to operate the Pickwick Co-operative creamery, a position which he held for six years. His wife died here on Feb. 11, 1913. About a year after her death the family spent two years in St. Charles when they returned to the village and Mr. Wilson purchased the store of F.J. Willard at Winona. April 7, 1915, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Helen Albrecht of Nodine who survives him. During their residence of twelve years here the family made many friends who extend their sympathy to the widow and daughters in their sad bereavement.

Mr. Wilson is survived by two sisters, Mrs. George Gleason of Nortonville, North Dakota, and Mrs. Newton Grant of Tomah, Wis. and seven brothers, Dr. Clarence Wilson of Dakota, John of Minneiska, Judson of Cumberland, Wis., Delbert of Parker, S.D., and Willis of Edgerly, N. D., who has spent the winter with his brother.

In addition to the relatives who attended the funeral there were Mr. and Mrs. John Wilson and son, Stanley, Mrs. Newton Grant and Willis Wilson, also Erdman Kowitz of Sparta, Wis., Mrs. Ed Dangle and Gus Kowitz of Adams, Wis.

The following brother Masons of the Pickwick Lodge, A.F. and A.M., of which Mr. Wilson was a member, attended the funeral: J.M. Rutherford, Floyd Dykeman, Clyde Harvey, Dan Stedman, Howard Stedman, Stuart Harrington, James Sperbeck, and Ray Le May.

Helen Wilson returned to Adams, Wis., with her aunt, Mrs. Ed Dangle. Melinda Wilson accompanied her uncle, Erdman Kowitz, to Sparta, Wis. for an extended visit, and Mildred Wilson returned to Winona where she is engaged in work.

Colonel Mathew Van Buskirk, general merchant, established his business in September, 1865. When he began business, he dealt for a time in boots, shoes and crockery. He afterward added dry goods, etc., to his stock, and is now doing a general merchandising business. Colonel Van Buskirk was born in Clinton county, N. Y., January 1, 1835. He left home in 1856, and went to Illinois, where he lived one year in LaSalle, and then removed to Polo, in that State. He enlisted, in September, 1862, in the 92d Regiment, Illinois Infantry. On the organization of Company E of that regiment, he was made its Captain. In February, 1864, he was promoted to the position of Lieutenant-Colonel of the regiment, and had command of the regiment from October, 1864, until the close of the war. He was in active service during his entire term of service in the army, participating in a large number of battles, including the desperate battle of Chickamauga, and many others almost as severe. His regiment belonged to the 14th Army Corps, and participated in the full Atlantic campaign, and also in Sherman's march to the sea. In 1863 his regiment was mounted, and served as cavalry during the rest of the war. Colonel Van Buskirk came here in July, 1865, and established his present business in September following.
As family members we were privileged to serve Matthew by obtaining a grave marker to honor him and his service.

Notes:

M.E. Brown, known for thirty six years and over as "Dick Dole" in newspaper correspondence, died Thursday, July 2nd, after a long and painful illness. The funeral was held in the M. E. church, a large concourse of people attending. Rev E.L. Ferris, an old friend of deceased assisted Rev. Lewis in the services. Mr. Brown moved to town previous to '49. In '63 he married Melissa Watson; they lived with his people until they went West. They had a son and daughter, who died while very young, both buried in one grave. After thirty-three years of wedded life Mrs. Brown died.
Here are a few words from The Sentinel Editor about this time or later:
"M. E. Brown, 'Dick Dole' for many years the Sentinels valued contributor from Ellenburgh Center, lately of North Hero leaves this week for California where he will make his future home. The Sentinel in acknowledging his services wishes for its old correspondent a safe journey and a happy and prosperous life on the Pacific slope" September 7, 1907.
Mr. Brown was 68 years old when he died. After returning to Center he married the widow of Charles Gale with whom he lived at the time of his death. He was a faithful member of the M. E. church. He was buried in Riverside cemetery.

Mrs. O.F. Pruett, long-time resident of Northfield, died Saturday, Feb. 17, at the home of her daughter in LaCrescent.

The funeral service was conducted at 4 o'clock Monday afternoon, Feb. 19, in the Bierman funeral chapel. The Rev. Richard G. Douglas was in charge. Burial was in Oaklawn cemetery, with six grandsons and great-grandsons as pallbearers. They were George Terry, George Terry, Jr., M. L. Zimmerman, Charles Messner, Louis Von Wald, Earl Von Wald.

Attending the funeral from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Punderson of Rochester, Robert Punderson of St. Paul, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Dick of Red Wing, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Longueville and family of LaCrescent, Mrs. and Mrs. Arthur Ellingboe of Dennison, Mr. and Mrs. Martin Benson of Cannon Falls, Mr. and Mrs. Goodwin Holt of Farmington.

Mrs. Pruett was born Aug. 17, 1862 at Ellenburg, N.Y, one of ten children of Jeremiah and Johanna Hubbard. When she was two years old she came with the family to Fond Du Lac, Wis., crossing the Great Lakes with their household goods and stock on a sailing vessel. In Wisconsin the father and older sons established a shingle mill and stagecoach inn.

Mrs. Pruett often recounted for her children interesting tales of pioneer Wisconsin, of the Winnebago Indian uprisings and massacres, and of travel by covered wagon and ox team.

As a young woman she taught in the schools of Traer, Iowa. In 1888 she married Oliver F. Pruett. In 1899 they moved to Hancock, Minn., and built a home on the prairie.

In 1910 they moved to Northfield, buying the old Hibbard house and acreage east of Northfield, in the present location of the golf course.

While in Northfield, Mrs. Pruett was a member of the Methodist church. She was an active church worker until confined by arthritis.

Her parents, all her brothers and sisters, and one daughter, Mrs. J. M. Punderson (Gertrude), preceded her in death. Mrs. Punderson died in 1937. Surviving are Mr. Pruett, three daughters, Mrs. Charles Messner, Sr., (Hazel), of Northfield, Mrs. Arthur Ellingboe (Della) of Denison, and Mrs. Paul Longueville (Mary) of LaCrescent;
ten grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

She Stayed in House Despite Bulldozers

LAMOILLE, Minn. - A for­mer Daily and Sunday News correspondent will be 90 years old Tuesday.
If this newspaper were still publishing neighborhood news columns, Mrs. Edith Stanton might still be wilting for us from Richmond as she did for 25 years, but when the Winona Republican-Herald, forerunner of today's publication, discon­tinued the “local” news items in 1945, she resigned.

THIS PRETTY little woman, however, could write a book about her experiences and those of her family. Her alert mind remembers everything about her forebears, the Tibbetts and Wilsons, without a glance at the manuscripts and letters that tell the same story.
Words tumble out about her experiences as a 16-year-old star route mail carrier; about Cou­sin Luther who raised the first seedless (navel) oranges that made millionaires of California growers overnight; the 200 pounds of shelled nuts she sold each season; of being routed from her home by highway building; of 16 people all sick with smallpox in a tiny pio­neer home.
She'll pause from her house­work-she lives alone and does her own cleaning and cooking-to sing all nine verses of a song written a century ago by a Tibbetts who left “Old Buck-eve” (Ohio) and sailed up the Mississippi River in a boat that “rang her bell at Catlin in the Minnesota Valley, the beauty of the West.”
She'll bring out an old violin her father played. It's a Joseph Guarnerius, made in Italy in 1715. “Ole Bull (famous vio­linist) played a Guarnerius,” she'll have you to know. It's said only seven were made; Oliver Tibbetts picked it up from a blacksmith in Dakota.

SHE NOT only knows the eastern part of Winona County, where she lives, but the west­ern part, too; she taught school at Lewiston and St. Charles.
The former Edith Cicel Tib­betts, she was born Dec. 12, 1887, on a 60-acre farm in Da­kota Valley, New Hartford Township. to Oliver W. and Mary Alice Wilson Tibbetts. “My second name isn't Cecil,” she explained; “it's Cicel; the pronunciation is on the second syllable, with a long e.”
The Tibbetts name is derived from the occupation of tip­pet making, a popular employ­ment in medieval days when tippets were worn by both sexes in the highest ranks of life, even by royalty.
The tippet, a hat with a long scarf or tassel, has found its way into modern life; knitted versions of a similar type are popular among the younger set.

VERSIONS OF her family name run far back in history, but the first of the Tibbetts from whom Edith is directly descended came to New Eng­land from old England in 1635 and have fought in all the wars of this land. The first of the family to come west settled in Ohio in 1807, in Indiana in 1816, in Iowa in 1843, and in Dakota, Minn., in 1847.
Jeremiah Tibbetts of Waver­ly, Bremer County, Iowa, came to Southeastern Minnesota when he was 17 with his friends, the Dakotah Indians, who asked him to accompany them as in­terpreter. They camped on the present site of Dakota, which Jeremiah named for redskins. He built a shack, transported provisions up the Mississippi by Canoe from Prairie du Chien, and started a trading post,
In 1848 Jeremiah accompa­nied the Indians to St. Paul. By this time he could speak six Indian dialects. Alexander Ram­say, territorial governor. sent him into the Big Wood country in Iowa to negotiate an agree­ment with hostile Indians. At first they were inclined to kill any messenger from the gov­ernor, but as they had known Jeremiah as a boy they agreed to accompany him to St. Paul; but before they left they held a dance in his honor.

JEREMIAH stayed In St. Paul until 1849, then sold his land in the center of the preseant city and trekked back to Dakota with two yoke of oxen and a span of horses.
At Dakota he found a trader, Peleau, in possession of his hut and repossessed it. Nathan Brown, who had settled north of him that year, was his only neighbor.
This energetic and restless young man worked on the riv­er, in 1853 took a quarter sec­tion of land on the ridge south­west of Dakota which was called Tibbett's Hill and later Mark's Hill, and the same year married Catherine Isabel Mayn­ard (accent on the last syl­lable), whose French Canadian family came from Ottawa and settled at Dresbach.
Theirs was the first wedding in Dresbach. He took his bride to Mt. Vernon, Iowa, to live with relatives, and there their son, Oliver, Mrs. Stanton's fa­ther, was born.

JEREMIAH'S father, George, the first of the Tibbetts to come to Iowa, had followed his son to Dakota Valley in 1850 and took up a farm south of where George Zenke now lives. Jere­miah was back in Dakota look­ing after his holdings when smallpox broke out in the set­tlement where his family was staying. When the head of the household died, he went back to get his family and the remain­ing four relatives, bringing them up the Mississippi on the Gray Eagle which landed at La Crescent, and thence to the house 16 by 20 feet that George had built.
The smallpox came with them, and the 16 people living in this tiny house fell ill. George died there in 1855 at 56, and one of the children from Iowa died. They were buried on the hillside hack of the house, where panthers, common in those days, molested their little cemetery.
The others recovered, and Dr. Lynch of Winona took Jere­miah's wife with him on his rounds to help other victims of the pox since she now was im­mune.

LATER THE hillside coffins were moved to the Wilson Cemetery in Dakota Valley, land which was donated by James Wilson, who had mar­ried Sarah Brown, sister of Na­than Brown. The cemetery is still there, bypassed by new I-90 grading.
James Wilson was the father of Alice Wilson, later Mrs. Oliver Tibbetts and of Dr. Clar­ence Wilson, who became a doctor at Dakota. Dr. T. H. Wilson, retired Winona physici­an now living at Catlin's Rock, Richmond Township is a son of Dr. Clarence Wilson.
By 1881 Oliver Tibbetts had purchased lots from Nathan Brown in Dakota, which he had platted, and built a home. There his wife died at 29 a few months after giving birth to her fourth child. Edith Cicel was then seven years old.
Edith attended the Dakota school, took the teacher's exam­ination at the courthouse in Winona under Supt. L. V. Wil­bur. and taught in the Firth District, Lewiston; Koepsel District north of St. Charles near Elba; Dick School on the ridge above Dakota; two years in the primary school at Dakota, and was teaching at the Richmond school when she coaxed a handsome young man named William Jacob Stanton to play the violin at school programs,

EDITH AND young Stanton were married June 25, 1904. They first lived in Miller's Valley west of the present Twin Bluffs Motel on the farm his father, Lewis Stanton, had set-tied in 1887. It remained in the family until this year when it was sold to Franklin Krause of Winona.
Edith's experiences, closely linked with roads, began when she was 16; occasionally she covered her father's 26-mile star mail route with a horse and buggy. The long day began at 8:45 a.m. at the Dakota post office. First stop, Ashton station on the right to the south-west. Second stop, Ridgeway, where she rested and fed her horse and ate her packed lunch. Third stop New Hartford, and then back to Dakota by 6 p.m.
In 1910 Edith and her husband moved onto a farm fronting the Mississippi River a short distance southeast of Millers Valley. The first dirt road the built up Mississippi River Valley in 1854 ran through their farm just under the Twin Bluffs; signs of it still are vis­ible on the property where she lives.

THEIR berry-growing and pasture farm began disappear­ing in the early 1920s when the state paid them $500 an acre for 2½ acres of frontage along the river for the first two-lane concrete slab from La Crescent to Winona - U.S. 61.
Mr. Stanton, Richmond Town clerk 28 years, winner of achievement awards for sale of Liberty Bonds during World War I and for serving on the Selective Service Board in World War II, did not live to see the rest of the land taken for the four-lane highway; he died of a heart attack in l952.
Through some misunderstand­ing the road graders moved onto her land before it had been purchased and Mrs. Stanton re­fused to leave her home even though the earth-moving ma­chinery roared around her and she was left literally high and dry. When she finally settled for $25 000, she climbed down out of her back door on a lad­der Sept. 6, 1957, and went to live with her sons until her lit­tle home on the service road, at the foot of King's Bluff, was ready.

THE DAYS when she sold carefully packed sacks of nut-meats at Kindts, Dorn's and Pletke's groceries and to individuals like Judge Loobv in Winona and to the Bodega restaurant m La Crosse are over but not forgotten.
She's busy writing Christmas notes to relatives and friends all over the country. There are Tibbetts in Portland. Ore.; grandfather George's brother, Gideon, lived here. Gideon and Mary streets are named for him and his wife, and Tibbetts Street bisects the Waverly-Richmond District named for him and perhaps for that Wav­erly in Iowa and Richmond in Winona County.
One of Edith's favorite stories is about Luther Tibbett, who like her father, was a seventh generation descendant from the Henry Tibbett who came to this country in 1635.

FROM HIS FARM in what is now Riverside. Calif., he drove horses 65 miles to Los Angeles in December 1873, to get a small parcel containing three little orange trees which the U.S. Department of Agriculture had secured from Bahia, Brazil. for experimental purposes. Luther got them be­cause his wife was a relative of Gen. Butler in Congress. Luther planted them beside his cabin. One was chewed up by a cow. By 1877, the other two each bore two oranges-the first seedless oranges grown outside the Amazon swamps. This started what has been called the most remarkable real estate boom in the history of this country; land which had gone begging at $30 an acre sold readily at $800 to $l,000 an acre for the planting of the new crop.
The two parent trees plant­ed by Tibbetts now are fenced in on the grounds of Mission Inn, Riverside. With them is a marker telling the story and bearing the Tibbetts name.

MRS. STANTON has two sons: Donald W., Lamoille, maintenance foreman with the state Highway Department, and Welford, also employed by the state Highway, who lives near Queen's Bluff. She has five grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Donald's sons are Robert L., La Crescent, diesel engineer with Kertzman Dredging, La­moille, and Tom W., lineman with Northern States Power Co., Winona.
Welford has three children: Bruce, Winona County deputy sheriff; Richard, teacher at Washington-Kosciusko school, Winona, and Mrs. Rolland (Jean) Smith, Dakota.
Wearing a hearing aid does­n't bother this sprightly woman who'll be 90 this week; she has a loud speaker on her tele­vision set. She's had a cataract removed from one eye but sees handily through her magnified glasses. She's worried a bit about her high blood pressure. but nothing interferes with her interest in life and her good spirits.

COMMENCEMENT HONORS AT WINONA HIGH SCHOOL

Miss Gladys Winter Ranks Highest and Will Be Veladictorian and Rolland Wilson Comes Next and Will Be Salutatorian — Both Residents of Dakota Village— Interesting Announcement by Principal Webster Davis.

Gladys Winter with an average grade of 95.32 was today declared to be the valedictorian of the class of 1915 of the Winona High school and Holland Wilson with an average grade of 94.68 the salutatorian of the class, by Principal Webster Davis before a general assembly of the student body of the school.
The honor roll of this year's graduating class oj the High school consists of fourteen students who have performed the work of their High school career with an average grade ibove 90 per cent. This compares very favorably with the honor roll of last year's class, which contained the names of fifteen students out of a class of eighty while this year's class will have only about 60 members.
Mr. Davis congratulated the school, the faculty and those on the honor roll for the excellent record they had made after his announcement had been received by the student body.

Winner of First Honors

Gladys Winter, the valedictorian, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William H. Winter of Dakota, Minn., her father being a fruit raiser. Misa Winter was born in 1897 and, although a student in Dakota, received most of her education in a little, rural, one-roomschool-hoese at Richmond, Minn. There she easily led her class and almost invariably carried off the reward of merit cards. She finished the later years of her grade schooling in Dakota, where she completed her work with high honors under Miss Cora Dickson, now Mrs. Frank Morrisey of Winona.
Miss Winter is a graduate of the literary course of the Winona High School having completed the subjects of that course with the exceptionally fine average of 95.32. Thruout her school career here she had done tplendid work and taken much interest and active.part in the different interests o£ the High school. She has been on the Radiograph staff and was editor in chief of a recent number. She also did splendid work as a member of the Junior Dramatic society a rear ago.

Second Honors Winner
Rolland Wilson, the salutatorion oi his class, is the son of Mr. and Mrs, C . E. Wilson, also of Dakota, Minn. Mr. Wilson was born in 1895, and as a student of Dakota, proved himself very competent in his school work, re ceiying very high marks. He completed his school work there in 1908 under Miss Agnes Hatch, four years before he took up his High school ionrse in Winona. C- B. Wilson, his father, is a physician and surgeon at Dakota. Mr. Wilson will be a graduate of .he classical course of the High school with an average grade of 94.68. Mr. Wilson has proved himself a consistent and excellent student all thru his school career and he has also taken an active interest in the affaiTs of Sis class and school. Conddentally, both Miss Winter and Mr Wilson, both residents of Dakota, started school at the same time and will complete their preparatory school work together with very high grades, the highest of their class, a worthy showing. An interesting feature of the honor roll which those people lead, is the fact that half of its members are boys and half are girls.

Dr. Rolland Harvey Wilson. 78. who retired from medical practice in Winona in 1965, died at 5:10 a.m. today at Commu-nity Memorial Hospital. He had been ill 10 years.
He located in Winona in July 1929, was appointed Winona County Physician in 1932, serving in that capacity about 15 years, and was elected city health officer in 1950.
He was a member of the Harmony, Minn., Greenfield Ma-sonic Lodge A.F. & A.M.: Winona Scottish Rite Bodies: Osman Temple of the Shrine St. Paul; a life member of the Winona County Historical Society, honorary member of the American Medical Association and the Minnesota State Medical Society of which he was past president, and served on the Minnesota State Welfare Committee about 20 years and was a member of the Winona County Medical So-ciety. He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church and had served as senior warden and vestryman.
The son of Dr. Clarence E. and Etna Harvey Wilson. be was born at Dakota, Minn., April 30, 1895. He attended Dakota schools, was a 1915 graduate of Winona Public Schools, attended Hamline University. St. Paul, two years and received the degree of medical doctor from the University of Minnesota Medical School in 1923. He served in the Army Medical Corps in World War I. On Sept.17, 1921, be married Hildred Thurow at Winona.
Dr. Wilson practiced in Harmony, Minn., six years. then was at Swedish Hospital, Minneapolis, where he did post graduate work in surgery prior to locating in Winona.
Survivors are: his wife; three sons, Dr. Louis Wilson, Rushford, Minn.; David D. Wilson, Waukesha, Wis, and Rolland H. Wilson, Jr., Minneapolis: eight grandchildren, and two sisters, Mrs. Earl (Alice) Smith, Winona, and Mrs. Wilfred (Sylvia) Quinlivan, Lakewood, Col.
Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m., Monday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, the Rev. A.S. Lawrence, Jr., officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.
There will be no visitation. Fawcett Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
A memorial is being arranged.

Larry Wilson Received the following on 11/3/01 in e-mail from Patrick Wilson:

As Helen Wood Birnie, Helen Wilson wrote the booklet "The Broken Wall" detailing her life as a Communist Party organizer in the 1930s and her subsequent abandonment of the Communist Party to become a civil rights activist and later a Christian activist. The book was published in July, 1954. Helen testified before the House Un-American Activities Committee to speak out against the Communist Party.

Helen used the name Helen DeMark in 1934 as an International Labor Defense Organizer for the Communist Party.

An excerpt from "The Broken Wall" (I added items in brackets):

I had polio when I was three years old. Now, obviously, I am not the only person in America who had polio, not the only person who suffered from it. It so happened, however, that I was the only individual in the village in Minnesota where I lived that had it at the time. And so I was marked as different. I felt the difference, and I did not appreciate it either. I did not like the idea that there were things that other children could do that I could not do. It made me unhappy because I could not romp up and down the hills with them or skate on the mill pond with them. I was always tagging way behind. These things began to stimulate bitterness and resentment in my heart. Of course, there were other reasons, too. We did not have a normal home life. My father [Wallace W. Wilson] was a man who suffered from bitterness because having married late in life and dearly loving my mother [Clara], he lost her when I was just three-and-a-half years old. I had two older sisters [Mildred and Melinda]. These girls, of course, were just as marked by this unfortunate circumstance as I ever was. But it shall be said that their reaction to it was different. We were scattered at the mercy of kindly neighbors and relatives who took us into their homes. My father remarried [Helen], but he was always a man who maintained a sober yet unhappy attitude. Everything that makes for a home was missing in the one in which I grew up. I do not say this because I want to cast reflection on anyone in my family or anyone in my community. But it is true that I did not have a positive understanding of Christian values as a child because they were not taught and presented to me in my home. Now it is easy for people to jump to a conclusion and say, "She's only making excuses." I can appreciate that, and I do not feel unkindly toward you if that is the way you feel. I am telling this story in the hope that people who are asking the question "Why do Americans take up with Communism?" will be honest enough to examine my life and see if, perhaps, it does not contain the answer.

My father died when I was twelve years old. I had the good fortune, however, of being reared close to a man who had a keen appreciation of human life [Clarence E. Wilson]. He was a country doctor, and my father's older brother. A fine and noble man as far as his convictions toward mankind were concerned, he was the kind of a country doctor that people were given to taking for granted, the kind you read about, the kind that folks would pay with pumpkins, rutabagas, cordwood and tomatoes in season and, not so often, money. My uncle was very near and dear to me because he was determined that I should not become one of those thwarted and unhappy individuals known as cripples. He did everything he could to make it possible for me to become a normal human being. He died a tragic death at his own hand when I was fifteen years old. This left an indelible mark upon my life. It caused me to be very bitter, because as I looked back across the years and remembered his faithfulness to his family, his community and to me in particular, I was made aware of the faithlessness of others to him in his hour of need. Pearl took in students (room and board) from the local college, and Willie was the janitor. Willie was a violinist and Pearl played the piano. She actually played for Peggy Lee when she was young and sung in Valley City, N.D. before she became professional.
Pearl also took care of both her parents in their home until they passed away. Frankie had several strokes you can tell from pictures even in 1954 that she was sitting. George was healthy and lived past 90 and Pearl enjoyed doing the caregiving from what I have heard. They lived right on the banks of the river in Valley City and "Pop" fished and they had picnics in their back yard until the river started flooding. They built a dike in later years to stop the water from reaching the house.

Autobiography - Helen Wilson

My parent's names were John Wilson, originally from Dakota, and Alma Swanson from Minneiska. They were married December twenty sixth, nineteen hundred. At the time of my birth, they lived in Dakota, Minnesota on a farm where I was born August twenty first, nineteen hundred and seven. I had a sister and brother older than myself who were named Stanley and Phyllis. So far as I know, I was baptized at a ladie's aid at my grandmother's house in Minneiska.

When I was still a baby, we moved from Dakota to Whitman on another farm. Whitman is between Minneiska and Minnesota City. We lived there about one year; then we moved to Minneiska because Stanley was old enough to go to school.

About this time, I must have been a little over a year old. Not very long ago I asked my parents how I looked, making the remark that I would hate to be as fat as my little cousin Harold. "Goodness" exclaimed my mother, "You were worse than Harold. You were so fat that you could hardly learn to walk and we couldn't hardly see your eyes at all." It makes me shiver to think what a sight I must have been. Anyway they say I was a very good baby and hardly ever cried. I cry quite a bit now when I get started.

Before I started school, I was very good friends with two girls living up the street whose names were Myrtle and Bernice Hastings. A neighbor boy named Rodney was also a good friend of mine and he is yet. At our house we had a lawn which sloped at the edge toward the sidewalk. My younger sister Lila, Myrtle, Bernice, Rodney, Phyllis and myself used to sit in a dishpan and slide down this slope, jumping off onto the sidewalk when we reached the stone wall. We also had a swing in our one apple tree where we had lots of fun. I can remember one day when Myrtle came down to play with me and their wasn't any board in the swing. We didn't know what to do for the rope didn't feel any too good. Finally I ran into the house and soon appeared with a pie-tin which served very well as a seat. The only damage done was a little bending. We lived in a house right by the schoolhouse so when Stanley got hungry at recess he would run in the house for "bread, butter and sugar". My sister Lila and myself used to like to run away. When we did run away, I always got the blame because I was the "oldest" of the two.

It was while we lived in this house, before I started school, that my grandparents in Minneiska died, fourteen months apart. When they died, there were no renters to live in the house so we moved there renting the place from my mother's brothers and sister. Our new neighbors were an old couple named Mr. and Mrs. "Put" Gray. We called Mr. Gray "Put" for short. His full name was Jeremiah Putnam. They made quite an impression on the children of the town for they went there to hear the man tell stories and to hear Mrs. Gray sing. Mrs. Gray hardly ever wore shoes and many people can remember seeing her go to shows in her old rose bedroom slippers. She was so fat and old that she could hardly move and if she fell down, we would have to call a couple of men to lift her up. These people had pet cats. Mr. Gray's cat was "Clover" and Mrs. Gray's cat was Trixie. If their cats would die, they called the new ones by the same names. They lived upstairs in their house and Hastings lived down stairs so now we lived right next-door to Myrtle and Bernice. They moved to Buffalo City, Wisconsin, right across the Mississippi and often I was so lonesome for the girls that I cried.

Then I started school. I can't remember the first day nor hardly the first year at all. I think it was in 1913 that I started, and I was six years old. My first teacher's name was Grace Dady and she made me like her very much. One day she sent all to the board; that is, the first grade. Chalk was scarce at the black boards, there being two varities. There was the hard and the soft chalk. Of course we all went after the soft chalk and kept it. One day I noticed a great, big, long piece of soft chalk and I could see Rosella's eyes glisten as she looked at it. The first thing I thought of was to keep that piece in my desk, using it when necessary so that is what I did. Rosella became jealous and told Miss Dady who made me put the chalk back. She (Rosella) looked as if she wanted it but now she couldn't have it at all.

When I was in the first two grades, I was a pet of the older pupils who were upstairs. They thought I was very cute because I was so little and plump. I wasn't nearly so fat as when I was a baby. I was six years old and had brown bobbed hair which my mother always decorated with ribbons.

I was about six years old when my father took me to the Winona General Hospital where my tonsils were taken out. I had a very nice nurse who made me like her because she gave me some lovely flowers and because she was good to me. I didn't want her to take my patent leather slippers and blue stockings off. The result was that my father kept my slippers, and I wore my stockings. The only unpleasant thing about the operation was having the yellow hood over my face. It smelled so strongly that it seemed as if I would suffocate; so I kicked and cried enough for two girls. When I recovered from the ether they seemed anxious to know how I felt and I told them I felt all right. I don't know if Dr. Nouth or my uncle from Dakota performed the operation. I was sick on the train that night and when I got home that night a whole group of girls and boys were sitting on the steps waiting for me. They regarded me as something wonderful for about a week and then it was all over. My tonsils were taken out during the summer vacation.

At school I made pretty good progress. When I was in the second grade Miss Fitzgerald put me in the third grade for reading and spelling. Miss Fitzgerald taught again the next year. When I was in the fourth grade my teacher's name was Margaruite Havorson. I can describe her as being pretty, soft, plump, charming and kind. All the pupils liked her very much. When I was thru the fourth grade downstairs I went upstairs to the fifth grade, and felt very exalted indeed. My fifth grade teacher was Harry White, a young man. This was his second term and also Miss Havorson's. They both acted as if they were in love with each other and many of us still believe it, although she is married to another man. They couldn't be separated with a pin, but I don't know if it was tried or not. My sixth grade teacher was Bridget Lee from Kellogg. She taught in Minneiska two or three years although I only had her for two weeks.

I had gone to school only two weeks. One noon I was coming home to dinner and had just reached our barn when suddenly a fierce pain shot thru my left leg. It came so quickly and hurt so much that instinctively I reached out to grab some support. There was nothing to hang on to and the next thing I knew was that I was laying in our garden right by the berry bushes. I picked myself up and found that I had rolled from the barn, over a stone wall and in the berry bushes. I no sooner got up than I fell again for my leg still hurt. Lila came up to me and helped me down to the house and my mother became greatly alarmed. She kind of guessed that it was a mild form of paralysis or something like it. That evening when my father came home they decided that I should go to my uncle who is a docter and who lives in Dakota. So on Saturday morning Stanley and I set out for the depot, I hanging desperately on his arm. Stanley was glad to go for he was fifteen years old and six feet tall, and loved to show off to little sister Helen that he knew all about trains. As we went thru the street I noticed everyone watching me and how I walked. This made me nervous. When we got to the depot we learned that the train was late. I kept asking Stanley all about trains, how to get on, how many seats were there, what would I do if there weren't any empty seats, and how late was the train. This last question I kept repeating for I was sick, nervous and scared. "Stanley, where is the train now?" "Oh 'bout up to Kellogg." Silence. "Stanley, do you know where the train is?" "It's halfway between Kellogg and Weaver." More silence. "Stanley, is the train to Weaver yet? How far away is Weaver?" "Yes, the train just got to Weaver. That's three miles away." There was a long silence (only five minutes). Finally I exclaimed "Ain't the train ever coming here?" Then Stanley was beginning to get nervous, (catching it from me) when the train pulled in and we eagerly climbed aboard. I believe that was the longest morning I ever spent for it seemed as if we never would get to Uncle Clarence's. When we did get there, it was nearly dinner time. Uncle Clarence came in from his office and Stanley told him all about me. Nothing was done, only I had to eat pills and drink medicine for a few days then Uncle Clarence wanted to see me in his office. It was just before dinner and I wasn't expecting to be examined then. I was a little scared, too, for Stanley had gone home Saturday night. Uncle Clarence felt and pressed my leg all over and nothing happened; he was just about to give up when he suddenly pressed my leg accidentally and I jumped as if I were shot. Sunday my father and mother, and Woodrow, came down to Dakota to bring me home again but I told them quite gaily that I had a sore throat, and besides Uncle Clarence wanted me one week more. My folks went home that night, which was one that I never slept thru. I vomited about four times, was sick, and stayed awake all nite. Next morning Uncle Clarence came in and found out I had the "flu". I was the first one in Dakota to get it and also the first Minneiska person to have it and I considered it quite an honor. In about a week and a half I was well enough to be up and Stanley came down again. He asked me if I wanted to come home but I had to go anyway for they were all packed up and ready to move to Kellogg. On the way home that evening it was Stanley's turn to ask me questions - which I gladly answered for now I wanted to show off to him. We got off the train that evening and quite a few were down to meet me. When we got up town I saw old friends who acted very glad to see me again. Most of them were surprised I cried that night, I was so glad to be home once more but I couldn't play at all. I had to sit quiet all the time to keep my leg rested.

We moved to Kellogg Oct. 2, 1917 or 1918. School was closed there for five weeks on account of "flu". I had already missed two weeks of school. All of us were sick in Kellogg except Pa who had to take care of us six. We got well and then Pa got sick. This was the second time I had the "flu". I missed two months and a half of school that fall while Stanley and Phyllis entered high school. I started a week later than the others, again on account of my leg.

When I was in the eighth grade, we moved back to Minneiska for most of us were lonesome for our old friends. That was in April 1920. Phyllis was a Junior so her and I went to school every day in the morning on the 6:30 train and came back at night on the 6:30 p.m. train. We had hasty breakfasts every day, cold dinners, and seven o'clock suppers. I studied after school in Kellogg and went to bed when I got home for I was always very tired.

That fall Phyllis and I went to school the same way. Phyllis graduated that year and I was just a freshman. I certainly was proud when Phyllis was made salutatorian. It was while I was a Freshman that my father wanted me to quit school, for the means of getting there was causing me bad health. I hated the idea of being put a year behind so I kept right on.

When I was a sophomore I had to go to school alone every day and I certainly was lonesome. Still, it was fun to travel alone all the time and I was a young girl yet (only 15 years old). After Christmas I started to board with Ledman's and life became much easier for me.

It was the summer before I became a Sophomore that I made my trip to Milwaukee. We had built a new house in Minneiska in 1920 when we moved back from Kellogg. In 1921 my uncle Art and his wife and child came up for a visit, in their car. When the returned, they took me along to spend two weeks. Instead of two weeks, it proved to be two months, and it is the best summer I ever spent in my life. I spent my fifteenth birthday in Milwaukee; just a week before school started I came back all alone on the train. In the one little week before I went back to Kellogg, I entertained the Minneiska kids with my stories about Milwaukee and one young girl whose name was Vera Johnson, told me I looked just like a city girl, but I never fully accepted her statement, seeing she didn't know anything about city girls at the time.

The following term was my sophomore year.

I went back to school as a Junior in 1923-24 and spent the year fairly well. I stayed with Mrs. C. Young.

Now I am a Senior. One of my happiest moments this fall was getting my class ring. It certainly made me feel proud of myself, even if I am not a genius nor an extraordinary girl.

I think I will graduate in June. Then I will go to Normal school and, if nothing happens, be a school teacher. Probably some day I shall go to college for I am beginning to have a yearning for a broader education. Maybe I'll never get there at all. Who can tell? Finis

Shirley R. (Rodgers) Virnig, age 86, of Minneiska, died early Friday morning, August 14, 2009 at St. Annes Extended Healthcare in Winona. She was born February 12, 1923 in Minneiska, the daughter of John and Alma (Swanson) Wilson. She was a graduate of Winona High School. She worked in Milwaukee and briefly in Washington, D.C. prior to her marriage. She married LeRoy Rodgers November 28, 1945 at St. Marys Catholic Church in Minneiska. She was a homemaker and he was the postmaster there for several years. Following his death in 1979 she became the acting postmaster, retiring in 1983. The post office was located in the grocery store they owned and operated from 1960-1976. She married Wilfred Bill Virnig March 5, 1983 at St. Marys Catholic Church.
She is survived by her husband, Bill Virnig, Winona, MN; daughters and sons-in-law, Ruth and Michael Virnig, Tucson, AZ, Judith and John King, Minneiska, MN, Theresa and Eugene Kohn, Plainview, MN, Doris Rodgers and partner, Ron Hewuse, Houston, MN; sons and daughters-in-law, John and Sigrid Rodgers, Centreville, VA, James and Patricia Rodgers, West Rutland, VT, William and Celeste Rodgers, Buffalo City, WI; 12 grandchildren; step-sons and wives, Michael and Ruth Virnig, Tucson, AZ, Daniel and Carla Virnig, Seattle, WA, Terry and Janice Virnig, Portland, OR, Arden and Patti Virnig, Onamia, MN; step-daughters and husbands, Barbara Virnig, Rochester, MN, Linda and John Kaufmann, Salem, OR, Donna and James Behmke, Columbus, OH, Ann and Donald Hoechst, Spring Grove, MN, Veronica and Gary Ives, Winona, MN, Christina and James Meyers, Eugene, OR; several step-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; nieces and nephews. Her first husband, LeRoy, two brothers, Stanley and Woodrow Wilson and three sisters, Phyllis Moore, Helen Siemanowski and Lila Speltz, preceded her in death.
Shirley was a life long member of St. Marys Catholic Church and its St. Anns Society.
A funeral Mass will be offered on Tuesday, August 18, 2009 at 11:00am at St. Marys Catholic Church in Minneiska with the Reverend Donald Lovas officiating. Interment will be in St. Marys Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Monday from 5-8pm where there will be a prayer service at 7:30pm and one hour before the service on Tuesday.

Excerpt: Letter from Delores Watson to Larry Wilson, 12/2/1992

In early summer of 1942 my sister, Florence Evenson and her husband Harry, came to Portland, Oregon to work in the shipyards. They left their two daughters with my mother and me to care for until they could get situated in the city of Portland. They traveled by auto, bringing their son, Harold, with them.

At that time, my father owned an eighty-acre farm five and one half miles north of Williams, MN. We, like so many people living in the rural areas, left home and hearth to seek work in the industrial war boom of the big cities. My father, Del Wilson, preceded my mother and me to the west coast and was working in Seattle, Washington.

In late July 1942, my sister and her husband were settled in Portland and wanted mother and me to bring the two girls (Lois and Joyce) to Portland. There was a Mr. Harry Denton in the Williams area who was using his truck to take passengers to the west coast and haul produce back to the Williams area. My mother, Lois, Joyce and I along with female members of three other families settled ourselves comfortably in the back of Mr. Denton's truck (it resembled a modern U-Haul truck)and headed west. I quit my job as a waitress earning $12.00 every two weeks. Upon arriving in Portland, obtained a job cleaning passenger railroad cars earning $4.00 per day. For this 20 year old, I felt as though I was on "cloud 9".

My husband Ralph, is from Norton, N. C. He had lived on the west coast since 1936 but only a few months in Portland. We met through a mutual acquaintence. A short, fast courtship as many were in those days, we were married in Portland on October 15, 1942. We recently celebrated our fiftieth wedding anniversary. Uncle John Wilson's son Woody and his wife Margaret were among our guests.
