James Crane was born in Vermillion County, IN. While an infant, his family moved west to Augusta, Butler, KS. As he grew up, he got a job as a plumber in Cowley County, Kansas. While there he met his future wife, Lecta Sutton. They married November 29, 1905 in Winfield, Cowley County, KS. They moved to Walla Walla, WA, hoping for an improvement in his health as he had contracted TB. This resulted in the loss of one lung. Their first child was born there. They then moved to California, settling in Redlands, San Bernardino County, January 13, 1908.
While in Redlands, their other 3 children were born. James was a plumber by trade, but also tried to sell cars during the depression. He loved to work with his hands, and made many things in his woodshop. He also played the French Horn. He was a Mason. [1]
