Ellis Brown died in 1834 without a will. His brothers, Reynolds H. Brown and Leonard Brown, were appointed administrators of the estate (Ellis's wife, Emmeline, and his father, Jonathan, had declined to be involved in the administration).
The appointment paper, dated 19 April, 1834, reads, in part:
Whereas Ellis Brown, as is alleged, lately died intestate, having whilst living and at the time of his death, goods, chattels, or credits, within this state: by means whereof, the ordering and granting of administration of all and singular the said goods, chattels, and credits; and also by auditing, allowing, and discharging the account thereof, doth appertain to us; and we being desirous that the goods chattels and credits of the deceased may be well and faithfully administered, sold, and disposed of, do grant unto you the said Reynolds and Leonard during the minority of Barzilla Brown, aged two years, the infant son of the said deceased..."
The appointment paper is in the Archives of Washington County, New York, at the Washington County Clerk of Courts, Washington County Courthouse, Fort Edward, New York, page 76, roll 477, blip X-0778. [4]
