  • Notes
    • I had that she was #654 Carpenter Genealogy, p.125, dau. of Job and Anne (_____) Carpenter.

GBFA expresses some doubt of her birthdate (which it has as 6 Oct 1732 in Swansea, Mass.), and perhaps her parentage. Her death is recorded 28 May 1814, aged 82 years, 5 months, 13 days, and from that date her birth is calculated as 15 Dec 1731. Her descendants say, however, that she died 24 March 1814. The Carpenter Genealogy lists the birth of #770 Hannah, daughter of Abiah and Experience (Abell) Carpenter, as May 11, 1734 [DAR records say she died in 1804; G. Ludens says her death date was May 8th; Mary Wesbrook's "Jacob Barney, 1634" gives her birth date as Oct. 1732].

In the will of Job Carpenter of Warwick, R.I., dated 19 March 1803, proved 25 May 1814 [Ref. Warwick Wills in R.I.G.R. Vol. 15 (1992), p.100] is mentioned sisters Lydia Wheaton, HANNAH BARNEY, and Anne Dowd. This Job Carpenter is thus #655 in the Carpenter Genealogy, son of Job and Anne (_____) Carpenter (b.6 Apr 1735; d. 21 May 1814 in Warwick), whose oldest and youngest sisters were #652 Lydia, wife of Andrew Wheaton and #656 Anne, wife of Noah Dowd. He also had a sister #654 HANNAH CARPENTER, b. 6 Oct 1732, who d. young according to the Carpenter Genealogy. Obviously this Hannah (Carpenter) Barney did not die young, and is likely the wife of Constant Barney. <-- Nov 1999: Probably not so "obvious."

WFT #4:1301 has this Hannah Carpenter, b. Oct. 4, 1732 in Swansea; d. May 28, 1814 in Arlington, Vt.; dau. of Abiah and Experience (Abell) Carpenter. WFT #9:0588 has her b. May 11, 1734; d. 1814; dau. of Abiah & Experience (Abell) Carpenter.

      Martha J Hicks (11/6/99): Hannah Carpenter, b. May 11 1734 in Rehoboth, Mass.; d. Mar 28 1812. Age at death: 77.

Nov 1999: I now think that she is #770 Carpenter Genealogy, p.136, dau. of Abiah and Experience (Abell) Carpenter; md. to Constance Barney as identified in the Carpenter Genealogy.
