Margaret C. "Peggy" Carpenter, 98, of Winona died Thursday, Dec. 1, 2011, at St. Elizabeth's Health Care Center, in Wabasha, Minn.
She was born March 3, 1913, to Carl and Elizabeth (Hilbe) Goetzman. On June 2, 1936, Margaret married Eldridge Smith; they later divorced. On Dec. 30, 1955, she was married to Bruce Carpenter and later divorced.
A lifelong resident of Winona, she was born and raised in West Burns Valley, attended the old Sugar Loaf School and graduated from Cathedral High School in 1931. For about 23 years, she worked as a nurse's aide at Winona General Hospital and then Community Memorial Hospital and ended her career as an LPN. Margaret was a member of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, and she enjoyed walking in the woods, bird-watching, traveling, especially to the national parks, crocheting, and cooking and baking for family and friends. Time with her family was a great treasure to Margaret. She will be greatly missed.
Margaret is survived by her daughters, Sally (Wayne) Reich, Rochester, Minn., and Sandra (Anthony) Kalica, Manchester, N.H.; grandchildren, Mark (Cindy) Porter, Michael Porter, Paul (Deeann) Kalica and Joseph Kalica; four great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sister, Irene Gallagher, St. Petersburg, Fla.; many nieces and nephews; as well as other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Arnold Goetzman; and sisters, Florence Goetzman, Helen Jereczek, Anne Piechowiak, Dorothy Malotke, Ruth Goergen and Rose Goetzman.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. The Rev. Richard Colletti will officiate.
Margaret will be laid to rest in St. Mary's Cemetery, Winona.
Visitation will be at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart on Thursday, Dec. 8, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the Mass.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that memorials be directed to Alzheimer's Research at Mayo Clinic, 200 — 1st Street, SW, Rochester, MN 55905.
