957 | Our Father was born on Valentines Day, and passed away on Fathers Day. John E Kolb was the first born of Joseph Edwin Kolb, and Leah Cochran. He made his Valentines Day entrance to their lives in Ipswich South Dakota, and shortly there-after the family moved to Hysham, Treasure County, Montana. The family stayed there a few years, and then moved to Pasadena in Southern California. John remembered fondly living in California, and riding his bike to the observatory up in the hills, and catching hell from his dad for it. He was about 8 or 9 when he did this with his friends. His father Ed, owned a gas station/repair shop there in Pasadena, but lost it during the depression. They then moved to Grass Valley, where Ed helped manage a friends fruit farm, until the friend lost his farm. Then they moved from Grass Valley California to Redmond Washington. John had very fond memories of growing up in Washington, and the "Swimming Hole" that they used to go to all the time. The kids all developed life long friendships there, (The Davidson Family especially) whom they remain in contact with to this day. John joined the Army Air Guard in October of 1942, and was initially set to train to fly, but during the training, his airsickness overcame him, so he had to change to airplane mechanic. He served for four years, and then returned home to Hamilton, in Washington state. John then worked on his father's dairy farm until he was married to Barbara in 1946, and then started doing large construction work with Barbara's father. In doing this construction work, they moved all over the northwest including Idaho and Montana and various locations in California. The family finally settled into the San Joaquin Valley near Sacramento. John worked for various "batch plants" as an operating engineer, then went to Viet Nam during the late 60's and early 70's with Morrison Knudsen, to help build bridges and airstrips that were needed for the war effort there. He returned to the states in 1972 at the end of the war. The family left California while John was in Vietnam, moving to Logan Utah. After he returned they moved from Logan to the Boise Idaho area. John worked for Idaho Concrete and Pipe in Nampa, until he was retirement age, retired, then decided retirement wasn't for him, and went back to work for them till he was 75 years old. He was a very hard worker, and his co-workers all loved him and appreciated him. They actually gave him two retirement parties, one the first time, and another at the second retirement. Dad was an AVID gardener, and raised the most beautiful, heavily producing gardens no matter where he lived. In 1995, John and Barbara and daughter Brenda moved to Clearwater Idaho, where they stayed, and had many friends in the Clearwater area. Both Barbara and Brenda are buried in the Clearwater Cemetery. John was a very devoted husband, and wonderful father - and a quiet soft-spoken man with a wonderful commitment to his family and friends as well as his God. We are very thankful as his children to have been able to have him in our lives. He was also paramount in the lives of his grandchildren who also live in the Clearwater area, as well as those grandchildren in other states. He loved to play chess with his grandson, and taught him all he knew about chess. Dad will be greatly missed by his children and grandchildren, and all those that knew him. John was able to spend the last 6 months of his life in the home of his youngest daughter and her husband, where he received wonderful care and a lot of love, surrounded by his family members, who came to visit him. We know that God will reward him well for a life well lived. Good bye Dad, we love you! | Kolb, John Edward (I5255)

She actually played for Peggy Lee when she was young and sung in Valley City, N.D. before she became professional. Pearl also took care of both her parents in their home until they passed away. Frankie had several strokes you can tell from pictures even in 1954 that she was sitting. George was healthy and lived past 90 and Pearl enjoyed doing the caregiving from what I have heard. They lived right on the banks of the river in Valley City and "Pop" fished and they had picnics in their back yard until the river started flooding. 997 | Ralph Keith Stokes, age 86, of Frontenac, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 29, 2011 at the Keystone Communities in Faribault, from complications of congestive heart failure. Ralph Keith Stokes, the youngest son of Ralph K. and Lillian (Hillock) Stokes, was born on February 18, 1925 in Waterloo, Iowa. He graduated from Orange High School in Waterloo. Keith was united in marriage to Jean Ann Hartman on February 17, 1950 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Waterloo, Iowa. After high school, Keith operated a dry cleaning business for 12 years. Keith then became a licensed realtor in 1957 and later acquired an independent insurance agency in 1965, which he owned and operated along with his real estate company. He later sold the insurance company, but continued selling real estate right up until his demise. Keith was past president of the Waterloo Cedar Falls Board of Realtors and served on many local and state Board Committees. He was named Iowa's Realtor of the year in 1967. After losing his oldest daughter Karen to suicide, Keith started and was facilitator, from 1982 until 1990, for a Suicide Survivor's grief support group that met once a month for friends and families that have lost someone to suicide. He was a member of the American Association of Sociology and attended many of their National Conventions. He was named Coordinator for a Government Suicide Prevention Program for the state of Iowa and surrounding states in 1985-1986. Keith also appeared on the Phil Donahue T.V. Show in 1985 to speak on the subject of young women and suicide. He was also interviewed by Good Morning America and several other radio stations to talk about the subject of suicide. Keith also presented suicide preventions programs to churches, services clubs, high schools, at the University of Northern Iowa and also held continuing education classes at Hawkeye Tech on suicide grief and preventions. Keith researched multiple sibling suicides in four Midwest states and presented his findings to the American Association of Suicidology. This study was done in partnership with a clinical psychiatrist who was also a sibling survivor of suicide. Keith semi-retired and moved to his family lake home on the shores of Lake Pepin in the historic, not incorporated Village of Old Frontenac. Keith had some unusual hobbies. He enjoyed mowing the grass, planting shrubs, trees and flowers. He became quite the landscaper with great canvas to work with. Keith also relaxed by shopping at fine men's clothing stores and always maintained an impressive wardrobe, as he loved to dress up. On the flip side, he also loved working in his workshop building things for his home. Keith loved all family get togethers and thoroughly enjoyed playing Santa for the grandchildren when they were young. His sense of humor, joy for life, joy for his family, joy for his working and producing, joy of helping upwards of four generations buy a home are just a few of his trademarks. He always just wanted to provide the best for his family, and this he always did. Keith is survived by his wife, Jean Ann; his children, Lynne (Bruce) Hansen of Prior Lake and Julie Trattles of Walters, MN; by his grandchildren and their families, Jennifer (Tate) Hallstrom and their son Lance, Jillian (Eric) Specht and their children Ava and Jace, Ellen Hansen, Brianna Trattles and Matthew Trattles and by many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Karen Wisner, his sister Zelma Latner and by his brother Eugene Stokes.
