Text Rollin Brown, the subject of this sketch, died at West Chazy April 4, 1903, of heart failure. He was born on the homestead where he died, 76 years ago, and has lived there continually ever since. He was the youngest son of Edmond Brown, who was one of the pioneer settlers of Chazy, having located upon the homestead known by his name, moving from Granville, Washington county, in the early part of the last century. He also lived and died upon the homestead, also his pioneer wife, Joanna Newton and another brother of Rollin Brown also died there. Deacon Brown was one of the first members of the pioneer Baptist church which held its meetings in the Douglass school house, and was a leader in the church all through its existence. Their church building is now used as a horse barn. The last minister who served this church was Elder Clark, who lived at the Junction of the Baker Hill road with the Old Military Turnpike. Rollin was the youngest boy in a family of eight children, all who grew to manhood and womanhood, four boys and four girls. He was a well educated man. Except a few terms of school in an academy at Canton, St. Lawrence county, he was self educated. He was a fluent conversationalist and was well posted in the history of our nation and its political actions. He helped form the Republican party and was a life long advocate of that party. He left the old Democrat party because of its open advocacy of slavery. He was soundly converted in early boyhood and also united with the Pioneer Baptist church. His faith in God was unlimited and his spiritual vision was keen and above the ordinary experience of man. When he would talk about the great and loving Christ as our personal Saviour his countenance would fairly shine with the spiritual electricity of Heaven. He leaves to mourn his loss an aged companion who has borne the burden of life by his side since young womanhood, (nee Sarah Flours); and three daughters all of mature age. Having been educated in the Baptist faith he was a rigid Calvinist and his arguments were unanswerable. Many who were of a different belief have crossed swords with him in argument but invariably have felt the sting of defeat. Thus has ended the life of a good man and a Christian. But with him, his life has just begun. The Christian sun never sets and the story never ends. Uncle Roll has gone to rest.
