Text | South Gardner January 8«sup»th«/sup» 1883 Dear Cousin, Yours with genealogy of Brown Family was duly received. Beriah Brown it seems had two sons, Charles and Alexander. Charles married a Phenix, Alexander a Huling. You are a descendant of Alexander, I of Charles. You and my father would be 6«sup»th«/sup» cousins. The descent in my line would be «sup»1«/sup»Beriah, «sup»2«/sup»Charles, «sup»3«/sup»Charles, «sup»4«/sup»Alexander, «sup»5«/sup»Charles, «sup»6«/sup»Charles Jr., «sup»7«/sup»Lucian W., «sup»8«/sup»Arthur W., «sup»9«/sup»Charles Arthur (of .....) who is my little grandson 6 years old who, with his mother, live with my wife and I, my son, Arthur W., having died three years ago. I have no record of when Alexander Brown came to Charlton, but he died there about the year 1800 in the town of Dudley (between Charlton and Webster and joining Ct. on the South). The records show that Charles Brown was born August 10, 1759, that he married Hannah Palmer of Thompson Ct. who was born Aug 6«sup»th«/sup» 1755. Alexander Brown's children were «sup»1«/sup»Nathan, «sup»2«/sup»Ruth, «sup»3«/sup»Charles, «sup»4«/sup»Rufus and they all came to Charlton probably with their father. My grandfather Charles had part of Alexander's farm. Rufus also had quite a large tract. When grandfather died in 1839 his farm was divided. My father had his share and his brothers theirs. More than 20 years ago I tried to find out where great-grandfather Alexander Brown came from by writing to old people and town clerks but found nothing. About a dozen years ago a cousin of mine, George Brown, a son of Joseph, my father's brother, was at the house of Henry Brown (son of John who was a son of Rufus who was Alexander's youngest son) and was shown some old papers amongst which was the Letter of Administration granted to Eleanor and Alexander, wife and son of Charles, in 1757. This George Brown is the only descendant of Alexander living on the old farm, and sometime since I wrote him to secure all the old papers afore mentioned and look up the records of the Town of Charlton for any information of the family. I hope he may ago in getting the old will. I don't know as anything more can be obtained from the records of your town as regards my great-grandfather Alex unless it might be his marriage or the birth of some of his children or the name of his wife. Charles is a great name in the family. My father Charles Jr. was born in 1790, married Hannah Clemance on March 5, 1811. They had 9 children, the first born March 1812, the youngest born Aug 10 1835. I was born Aug 11«sup»th«/sup» 1833. Alexander Brown's children were «sup»1«/sup»Nathan, «sup»2«/sup»Ruth, «sup»3«/sup»Charles, «sup»4«/sup»Rufus. His grandchildren were the sons and daughters of Nathan «sup»1«/sup»Alexander, «sup»2«/sup»Hannah, «sup»3«/sup»Sally, «sup»4«/sup»Chauncy, «sup»5«/sup»Nathan Jr., «sup»6«/sup»Stephan, «sup»7«/sup»Philoe, «sup»8«/sup»Amity, and «sup»9«/sup»Ruth. The sons and daughters of Charles (my grandfather were: «sup»1«/sup»Amity, born Oct. 13, 1784, «sup»2«/sup»Samuel, born Aug 15, 1786, «sup»3«/sup»Rachel, born June 20, 1788, «sup»4«/sup»Charles Jr., Born June 2, 1790, «sup»5«/sup»Dudley, born Nov. 20, 1791, «sup»6«/sup»Joseph William and «sup»7«/sup»Joshua Johnson twins born Aug 15, 1794, and Alpheus, born Aug. 18, 1797. The sons and daughters of Rufus were: «sup»1«/sup»David, «sup»2«/sup»Olive, «sup»3«/sup»John, «sup»4«/sup»Rufus, «sup»5«/sup»Mary, «sup»6«/sup»Thomas Paine, «sup»7«/sup»Charles, «sup»8«/sup»Zepheniah, «sup»9«/sup»Jefferson, «sup»10«/sup»Mehalea, «sup»11«/sup»Ruth, «sup»12«/sup»Joseph Dudley, «sup»13«/sup»Liberty. Alexander's daughter, Ruth, married a man named Childs and lives in Vermont. If there has ever been any records of Rhode Island Colony published I should like to get them. We have in our Village Library a full set of the Plymouth Colony records commencing with the landing of the Pilgrims from the Mayflower in 1620. I think you will think I have given you a big dose this time, so will close. Should be glad to hear from you often and as soon as I hear from Charlton will write you again. Yours truly, L.W.
