Diane (Pylkas) Smith wrote in her 2003 email to Larry Wilson:

"This is my Grandmother's first communion. My mother was not
catholic that I know of. Grandmother Mary left the church when
she married LeRoy. The dress was designed by Grandmother
Mary's mother Augustus Warner Staack."

Photograph was taken around 1896 assuming Mary was about thirteen when it was taken.
