William H. Cotter Jr.
Chief of State Recreation Dept.
William H. Cotter Jr., 82, of Lambert Street, Narragansett, die on Monday, June 6, 1994, in Westerly Health Center, Westerly. He was the husband of Hildegard (Uebach) Wright Cotter.
Mr. Cotter was chief of the state Divsion of Parks and Recreation from 1952 until retiring in 1973.
Born in Providence, a son of the late William and Sadie (Barney) Cotter, he had lived in Narragansett most of his life.
Mr. Cotter was a 1933 graduate of the former Rhode Island State College, now the University of Rhode Island, where he was a member of Theta Chi fraternity. In the early 1940's he served as Rhode Island state administrator for the National Youth Administration. He was later the assistant to the general manager of the former Standard Machinery Co., Providence. He had also worked in the URI Athletic Department.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Peter B. Cotter of Warwick; a daughter, Christa Cotter Orsini of Pembroke Pines, Fla; two stepsons, Frederick T. Wright III of New London, Conn., and Stephan B. Wright of Northport, Fla; two stepdaughters, Heidi M. Reardon of Narragansett and Gretchen A. Tingley of Charlestown; two brothers, Walter E. Cotter of Barrington and Richard S. Cotter of Idaho Falls, Idaho; 15 grandchildren and a great-grandson.
He was father of the late William H. Cotter III and brother of the late Alice C. Robinson.
The funeral will be held today at 9 a.m. from the Lawrence E. Fagan Jr. Funeral Home, 825 Boston Neck Rd., North Kingstown, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 at St. Thomas More Church, Rockland Street, Narragansett. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery, Peace Dale.
