Herman F. Gerlicher, president of the Dr. Koch Vegetable Tea Company,one of the growing concerns of Winona, is a native of the city where he still resides, born April 10, 1862, son of Andrew and Susan (Oech) Gerlicher, the pioneers. He was taken to Wilson township, this county,as an infant, and there remained until eighteen years of age, attending district school, and assisting his parents with the general work of the farm. After a year's course in the Iowa Wesleyan University, at Mt.Pleasant, Iowa, he entered the law offices of Gould & Snow, at Winona, with whom he remained a year. Then he entered the employ of the L. C. Porter Milling Co. Subsequently, he worked for the Laird, Norton Company from 1882 to 1906, a period of nearly twenty-five years. In 1906 he became actively engaged in the Dr. Koch Vegetable Tea Co. Mr. Gerlicher is one of the popular men of Winona, and is a member of the Blue Lodge and the Scottish Rites bodies of the Masonic order. The subject of this sketch was married, February 4, 1886, to Sophie Staack, a native of America but of German ancestry. This union has been blessed with three children, Henrietta, Roscoe F. and Stanley C. The two sons live at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. Henrietta married Walter A. Swoffer, and they have two children, Gretchen and Walter John.
The Dr. Koch Vegetable Tea Company was originated in 1890, by George W. Gerlicher, the founder and organizer, and was a gradual development from the drug business in which he had for some years been engaged. The success of the company was assured from the start and the business is growing year by year. The concern manufactures Dr. Koch's Remedies, extracts, ground spices, toilet articles, and the We-no-nah stock tonic, the We-no-nah poultry tonic and the like, all of which are sold throughout the United States. The plant is at 61-63-65 East Second street, Winona. In 1906, by reason of ill health, George W. Gerlicher withdrew from active work, and moved to Los Angeles, California. Other members of the family have gradually become interested in the concern.
The present officers are: President, Herman F. Gerlicher; vice-president, Ben F. Gerlicher; secretary-treasurer, Carl Gerlicher."

Mary Wesbrook's book lists a William E. Barney (d.1898); md. Maley Lemond in Salem, Mass. as a son of Freeborn David Jones Barney. But I don't think so. This William E. Barney (according to p.192 of Mary's book) had 3 children:

1. Leah, b. Feb 1848; d. 15 July 1860 in Lynn, Mass.
2. Jennie F. (b. about 1863; d. 11 Aug 1885 in Boston, Mass.
3. William, b. abt 1865; d. 20 Aug 1894.

147 "Mr. and Mrs. Brown made their home after their marriage in the old Holden homestead in Crompton, which was purchased by Captain John Holden, in October, 1816. Mrs. Brown removed from the homestead to her present home in July, 1896, taking with her many precious heirlooms and antiques, among which was the grandfather's clock, which had stood in one corner of the old home for seventy years. It would be a pleasant task to weave a romance, rich in anecdotes of generations gone by, around the scenes on which the old clock has looked down." Holden, Sarah (I5757)

Barney, William Henry Harrison (I1992)

150 "Representative Men and Families of Rhode Island," pp.1658-1659;

Per Roger Kenyon [son of Muriel Ora (Colwell) Kenyon] as told to Maurice Colwell Barney III by his cousin, Pamela Ruth (Barney) LaBanca, William Henry Barney (WHB) died after getting drunk and falling in a snowbank, subsequently catching lobar pneumonia (flu).

His father-in-law, Maurice Gilbert Colwell (MGC), having to bury WHB in February 1907 also took ill (see Colwell family records) and died shortly (2-3 weeks) thereafter. Thus, two families lost their respective heads of the households in a very short time period.

Per Glendon Colwell Hall (July 16, 1994) the Colwell/Barney (meat) business had been well on its way to making both MGC and WHB millionaires. The family business died out with these two men and was absorbed by other local businesses.

Glendon Colwell Hall "Colwells of New England" record indicates WHB and Ethel Ora Colwell were married August 28, 1900, while the book "Genealogy of the Barney Family in America" [see editor's note on page 442] indicates they were married on August 31, 1900. Maurice Colwell Barney III looked up records of marriages in Providence, RI for the period 1891-1900, inclusive, and verified that the marriage date is August 28, 1900. The Barney Family Historical Association has corrected thier records too.
Barney, William Henry Jr. (I1995)
