I pickup up this audio book at the library to listen to on our annual trip back to Rhode Island.\u00c2\u00a0 On the case was a statement that it had been nominated as a finalist for the 2008 Man Booker Prize.\u00c2\u00a0 The story was about a person, Roseanne McNulty,\u00c2\u00a0who was committed to a mental hospital in Ireland\u00c2\u00a0and had written a secret memoir of her life.\u00c2\u00a0It takes place in Skibbereen, Ireland, a place where my wife’s ancestors apparently came from, so it was interesting to learn a bit about the area and the folks who lived there.<\/p>\n
The plot sounded pretty interesting and the fact that it had been nominated for the\u00c2\u00a0Man Booker Prize recommended it well.\u00c2\u00a0 Unfortunately, the\u00c2\u00a0story unfolds at a snail’s pace.\u00c2\u00a0 Her life was\u00c2\u00a0pretty interesting and how she came to be committed to a mental institution was also of interest.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0The author, however, seems to have a knack for making an otherwise\u00c2\u00a0compelling story pretty boring.\u00c2\u00a0 The final\u00c2\u00a0twist in the story\u00c2\u00a0is fairly predictable early on so the final\u00c2\u00a0“surprise”\u00c2\u00a0can be\u00c2\u00a0described\u00c2\u00a0by the current vernacular phrase, “not so much”.\u00c2\u00a0 After plodding through the first four or five CD’s, the story picked up a bit, but not enough to redeem it.<\/p>\n
On the plus side, the writing is great and the two main characters are portrayed very well. The narrator is also excellent.<\/p>\n
I hope the Man Booker prize folks can find material a bit more compelling to choose from going forward.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
