{"id":66,"date":"2007-12-09T21:02:26","date_gmt":"2007-12-10T04:02:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wilsonld.com\/weblog\/?p=66"},"modified":"2009-01-26T07:55:23","modified_gmt":"2009-01-26T14:55:23","slug":"evolution-and-why-it-matters-in-the-2008-presidential-race","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wilsonld.com\/weblog\/?p=66","title":{"rendered":"Evolution and Why it Matters in the 2008 Presidential Race"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There has been much discussion lately regarding the religion of a particular candidate for president.\u00c2\u00a0 Also, many groups are using the issues of abortion and gay marriage as litmus tests to determine if a particular candidate is, in their view, qualified to be president.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t believe religion, abortion, or gay marriage really matter as long as a person is not too aggressive in imposing his or her beliefs on others.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Those particular issues are all based on a particular set of values and beliefs.\u00c2\u00a0 It is very difficult to discern which set of values and beliefs is &#8220;correct&#8221;, &#8220;true&#8221;, or &#8220;valid&#8221; simply because they are values and beliefs.\u00c2\u00a0 A good person, in my opinion, can be a Mormon, a Catholic, a Protestant, an Evangelist, a Jew, a Muslim, etc.\u00c2\u00a0 Likewise, a\u00c2\u00a0person of good character can be\u00c2\u00a0pro-choice or anti-abortion,\u00c2\u00a0or a good person can be for or against gay marriage.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0A\u00c2\u00a0person of good character\u00c2\u00a0can also either\u00c2\u00a0accept or reject the theory of\u00c2\u00a0evolution.\u00c2\u00a0 The difference, however, is that evolution theory has been substantiated by over 100 years of scientific knowledge and thought.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0There are certainly some holes still left in the theory and if an individual ignores the bulk of the\u00c2\u00a0evidence and wishes to give more weight\u00c2\u00a0to his or her beliefs regarding evolution, I have no problem with that\u00c2\u00a0&#8230;\u00c2\u00a0unless\u00c2\u00a0the\u00c2\u00a0individual is the President of the United States.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0The office of the President requires a person who can weigh the evidence and facts of each situation and make rational decisions as to the best course of action.\u00c2\u00a0 I don&#8217;t feel that someone who does not\u00c2\u00a0accept the theory of\u00c2\u00a0evolution fits that description.<\/p>\n<p>The office of the President sometimes requires that the person who occupies it be able to make quick, rational decisions under extreme pressure.\u00c2\u00a0 Can somebody in that office who does not even\u00c2\u00a0accept the evidence\u00c2\u00a0in favor of\u00c2\u00a0evolution\u00c2\u00a0make good decisions in complex situations such as the Cuban\u00c2\u00a0missile crisis?\u00c2\u00a0 I\u00c2\u00a0would question that.<\/p>\n<p>I ordinarily don&#8217;t like litmus tests to determine if a candidate is worthy of my vote for President, but when a candidate professes to reject the theory of evolution, I think that is where I will draw the line.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There has been much discussion lately regarding the religion of a particular candidate for president.\u00c2\u00a0 Also, many groups are using the issues of abortion and gay marriage as litmus tests to determine if a particular candidate is, in their view, <span class=\"excerpt-dots\">&hellip;<\/span> <a class=\"more-link\" href=\"https:\/\/wilsonld.com\/weblog\/?p=66\"><span class=\"more-msg\">Continue reading &rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[38],"class_list":["post-66","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-politics","tag-politics"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/wilsonld.com\/weblog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/66","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/wilsonld.com\/weblog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/wilsonld.com\/weblog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/wilsonld.com\/weblog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/wilsonld.com\/weblog\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=66"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/wilsonld.com\/weblog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/66\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":285,"href":"https:\/\/wilsonld.com\/weblog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/66\/revisions\/285"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/wilsonld.com\/weblog\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=66"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/wilsonld.com\/weblog\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=66"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/wilsonld.com\/weblog\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=66"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
