{"id":1283,"date":"2012-12-07T21:40:12","date_gmt":"2012-12-08T03:40:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wilsonld.com\/weblog\/?p=1283"},"modified":"2015-05-31T12:48:41","modified_gmt":"2015-05-31T18:48:41","slug":"the-prague-cemetery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wilsonld.com\/weblog\/?p=1283","title":{"rendered":"The Prague Cemetery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>by Umberto Eco, 2010, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Co., New York<\/p>\n<p>While I read this book I kept thinking it was going to get better.\u00c2\u00a0 It didn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>I was interested in the book because it had to do with the Masons and their relation to the Catholic Church.\u00c2\u00a0 It was, rather, a book about a particularly despicable and bigoted character who lived in the 19th century and had a large role in spreading hatred of minorities and Jews in Europe.\u00c2\u00a0 In fact, at the end of the book he claims to have created the circumstances that will eventually lead to their elimination through the final solution.\u00c2\u00a0 Yuk!\u00c2\u00a0Also, the author sets the story against the backdrop of European history and requires the reader to have a fairly intimate knowledge of all the historical players.\u00c2\u00a0 Although I had quite a bit of European history in college, I have to admit I was lost a good deal of time, especially during the parts involving the Italian unification and Garibaldi.<\/p>\n<p>What was good about the book:\u00c2\u00a0 The main character had a split personality and the dialogue between the two personalities was unique.\u00c2\u00a0 That was about it.<\/p>\n<p>I guess I don&#8217;t understand how someone who once won the Nobel prize in literature can write a book that is so hard to like.<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"2 stars\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wilsonld.com\/weblog\/wp-includes\/images\/stars-2-0.gif\" alt=\"2 stars\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Umberto Eco, 2010, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Co., New York While I read this book I kept thinking it was going to get better.\u00c2\u00a0 It didn&#8217;t.
